Parrot Heads raise $35,000 to fight cancer
SouthCoastToday.com: Parrot Heads raise $35,000 to fight cancer: "NEW BEDFORD — Everyone likes to have a good time, but the Nautical Whalers Parrot Head Club will tell you it's a lot more fun when you party with a purpose.
The nonprofit organization, which draws its inspiration from feel-good musician Jimmy Buffett, is widely known for its charitable endeavors. The 190-member Nautical Whaler's chapter of the worldwide contingent recently presented a check for nearly $35,000 to the Jimmy Fund-Dana Farber Cancer Institute on behalf of the nine New England Parrot Head chapters.
'Our goal is to have fun and help out people who need it,' said Brian Woolley, a cancer survivor who founded the local chapter of the Parrot Head Club in 1999, along with his wife, Maureen. 'We saw a real need in the area and decided to do something.'
'Around that time we founded the group I was in an accident that kept me laid up for 18 months,' said Ms.Woolley, noting that Mr. Buffett's music helped lift her spirits during the difficult time."
