Jon Bon Jovi's star-filled Hamptons party is a rock & roll ball of fame

Jon Bon Jovi's star-filled Hamptons party is a rock & roll ball of fame: "Jon Bon Jovi's star-filled Hamptons party is a rock & roll ball of fame

A little Hamptons dinner party turned into a summit of the rock gods Saturday night. Jon Bon Jovi and his wife, Dorothea, were celebrating nothing more than the end of summer when they invited some friends over to their East Hampton spread. But then their friends do include Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, Jimmy Buffett and Pink Floyd's Roger Waters.

The surf-and-turf dinner would have been enough for a crowd that included Renee Zellwegger, Naomi Watts, Howard Stern, 'Today' anchor Matt Lauer, designer Donna Karan, New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine, Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner and 'Saturday Night Live' producer Lorne Michaels. But, about 11 p.m., Bon Jovi jumped onstage to join the party band. Pretty soon, people were dancing. Before long, McCartney joined Bon Jovi at the mike - along with Joel, Buffett and Waters. 'Billy was wailing on the keyboards,' said one guest. 'They performed for a good hour of rock classics. Nobody could believe it. Howard Stern was really rocking "

TheStar.com - entertainment - The complicated uncomplicated life of Jimmy Buffett: "The complicated uncomplicated life of Jimmy Buffett"

ep 01, 2007 04:30 AM
ENTERTAINMENT COLUMNIST

Sometimes Jimmy Buffett's world gets a little too complicated.

After a lifetime spent in the pursuit of uncluttered self-contentment – "some music, a couple of hours in the water, a nap in the afternoon is all I really need," the American folk-pop icon said during a recent interview – he seems to have achieved exactly the opposite.

He's the head of a massive and complex empire that embraces recording, distribution, music publishing, merchandising and concert interests; the creation of several bestselling novels and an autobiography; Internet radio; movie and stage musical productions; two restaurant chains; a brewery, and a casino resort that will open in Biloxi, Miss. in 2010, not far from his birthplace in Pascagoula.

The 61-year-old accidental mogul, who also flies and collects antique planes and regularly sails his own yacht to distant and exotic destinations, says he has "about 4,000 or 5,000" people working for him and a handful of executives who take care of the various day-to-day operations of his multi-faceted business.

But though he likes to think he has his hand on the wheel, that's not always the case. A few months ago the much-mythologized, free-spirited macho icon worshipped by hundreds of thousands of self-proclaimed Parrotheads approved a general U.S.-food industry-inspired ban on Canadian seafood in his restaurants and immediately found himself at odds with his legions of Canadian fans, as well as relatives in Newfoundland.

The nine essential Jimmy Buffet songs - Music News & Trends - BostonHerald.com

The nine essential Jimmy Buffet songs - Music News & Trends - BostonHerald.com: "The nine essential Jimmy Buffet songs By Jed Gottlieb Friday, August 31, 2007 If you want to run a marathon - or spend the weekend sucking down margaritas - all your body parts need to be working in concert. Big accomplishments only happen when the little things operate in perfect harmony. Take a Jimmy Buffett show for proof. Structured with the intricacy of the human body - a big, balding, tequila-infused human body uniformed in flip-flops and a Hawaiian shirt - a Buffett concert is built of songs you know by heart that are greater than the sum of its parts. To illustrate how all the vital organs play their part, we’ve dissected Buffett’s likely Gillette set list (our apologies to “Operation” creator Milton Bradley)."

Appeals court rejects Webcast royalty delay | Entertainment | Music | Reuters

Well, this bites the big one... and will be the death of many an Internet radio station. Although to be honest it really doesn't affect me it still is wrong because the Internet stations are paying different fees that regular radio stations. This is WRONG!!!!!

Appeals court rejects Webcast royalty delay | Entertainment | Music | Reuters: "WASHINGTON (Hollywood Reporter) - The federal appeals court here on Thursday rejected Webcasters' request to postpone implementation of a new royalty rate for music they air over the Web.

The decision hands a court victory to the music industry and performers who have been warring with Webcasters over the rate. By denying the Webcasters' stay, the court let stand the July 15 'true up' date when they are required to give copyright holders a new, higher royalty payment for digitally delivered music.

'This is a major victory for recording artists and record labels whose hard work and creativity provides the music around which the Internet radio business is built,' SoundExchange executive director John Simson said. 'Notwithstanding this victory, we continue to reach out to the webcasting community to reach business solutions.'"

For some, Buffett concert failed to meet expectations | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle

For some, Buffett concert failed to meet expectations | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle: "I would say the Jimmy Buffett concert at Minute Maid Park was a little disappointing. I can understand Dr. Utley being ill (clearly he didn't take the right kind of weather with him to wherever he caught the bug), but there were a few other people missing from the stage as well. For example, the brass section was down to one person instead of the usual three. Mac McAnally trying to play the piano with a guitar strapped on was tough, although he did a fairly good job with the few chops he had to hit on the keyboard.

The sound was uneven. At times the music drowned out the lyrics and, as we all know, Jimmy's songs are 75 percent lyrics and 25 percent melody. Not sure if it was first-stop-of-the-tour logistical problems or lack of rehearsal time.

Still, a really good concert. The new songs are great. In fact the album is one of his best since License to Chill and a step above Beach House on the Moon. Who says you have to know the old Buffett songs to enjoy being a Parrothead? To those folks I say 'breathe in, breathe out, move on.'

Note to Drayton: Please ask the beer vendors not to hawk beverages during the concert. They tried to do it quietly but still, it's not a ballgame when Buffett is singing and the Coral Reefers are playing in centerfield"

Hoffman: Minute Maid is ready for Parrotheads | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle

Hoffman: Minute Maid is ready for Parrotheads | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle: "Jimmy Buffett's concert Saturday night at Minute Maid Park took six months to negotiate, but the ball really started rolling three years ago when the Houston Astros hired Jay Lucas to run their communications department.

Lucas is a certified Parrothead, a longtime Buffett fan.

Astros president of business operations Pam Gardner 'mentioned that the team was interested in getting a show or two at Minute Maid,' Lucas said. 'The first person I thought of was Jimmy Buffett. He hadn't played Houston in a long time. When you check out the way he packs concerts all over the country, I figured if you're looking for someone to play here, he's the one. Plus, I had struck up a friendship with people in Jimmy's management company during my years of working for the Dodgers.'

Lucas called Buffett's management and said, 'We'd like to have Jimmy play Minute Maid Park. What do we have to do to get him here?'

The first order was putting together a formal proposal. That took a month.

'Kala Sorenson, our vice president of special events, included seating charts and aerial photos from other events, like the party for President Bush and the George Strait concert. Jimmy's team wasn't familiar with our ballpark as a venue, so we wanted to show that we can stage a concert of thi"

This special song would do the state proud - Orlando Sentinel : Music

This special song would do the state proud - Orlando Sentinel : Music: "In the wake of recent debate over replacing Stephen Foster's 'Old Folks at Home' as Florida's state song, advocates for new tunes are coming out of the woodwork.

There's 'Florida,' a breezy ode to ocean breezes, fishing and sunshine by Apopka-born country singer Patrick Gibson, who calls himself the 'Florida Cracker Country Boy.' It sounds like a lost Jimmy Buffett track.

'It's just the perfect song,' says Jeff Schoenthaler, Gibson's manager. 'If we could get it to the right person, it could be a big hit. It really sums up what Florida is about.'"

6-string slingers

TUSKmag.com: "If he weren’t a long-acknowledged master, you might apply the term journeyman to Will Kimbrough.

It’d be a punning thought, based on the idea that an in-demand musician often makes his living on the road, bound to no master but unable to set up shop on his own.

But it’s mostly inaccurate, because to a lot of people, those with ears to hear outside the MTV-CMT-Clear Channel party lines, Will Kimbrough is a master musician, one who should have long been a superstar with the requisite legions of fans and followers.

If his fans’ fans would just follow, he’d probably have the big numbers. We’re talking about Kimbrough fans such as Jimmy Buffett, Rodney Crowell, Todd Snider and Kim Richey.

Kimbrough has led a number of bands, from his early days with Will and the Bushmen, cutting two discs for Capitol EMI, to The Bis-quits and Daddy projects with fellow should-be-a-star Tommy Womack. And he was the mainstay behind Snider’s Nervous Wrecks, as lead guitarist and harmony vocalist, in a relationship that continues today, with Kimbrough producing and playing on Snider’s most recent records.

He’s been a sideman with luminaries such as Crowell, Kim Richey and Josh Rouse, and produced records not just for Snider but for Adrienne Young and Kate Campbell. A couple of years back" his fellow Mobile native Buffett cut a version of Kimbrough’s song “Piece of Work,” and later invited him down to St. Bart’s to co-write some new tunes.

While they were enjoying the weather, up popped Roger Waters of Pink Floyd.

“So I had a conversation over beers and sushi with Roger Waters about Neil Young and “Rust Never Sleeps,’” Kimbrough said.

“That is something that you would have dreamed up as a teen-ager, and I actually did it. I make a living doing this,” Kimbrough said.

Selectmen voted to license the two sold-out shows, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 2, and Saturday, Sept. 8.

Selectmen voted after discussing the parking issues with Police Chief Edward O'Leary, stadium official Dan Murphy and Stadium Advisory Committee Chairman George Bell II.

'I think we've gone out of our way,' Selectmen Vice Chairman James Thrasher said. 'The public understands we're not licensing the lots to open until 3:30 p.m.'"

Music publishers accuse XM of copyright infringement | CNET News.com

Music publishers accuse XM of copyright infringement | CNET News.com: "An association of music publishers late on Thursday filed a lawsuit that accuses XM Satellite Radio of refusing to stop 'widespread infringement' of popular copyrighted songs.

In a complaint filed in New York federal court, the National Music Publishers Association (NMPA) argues that the satellite radio operator's 'XM + MP3' music service skirts copyright laws by allowing radio listeners to make permanent copies of on-air tracks through devices like the Pioneer Inno player without permission and without properly compensating songwriters.

The service 'constitutes pervasive and willful copyright infringement to the overwhelming detriment of copyright holders, legitimate online music services and, ultimately, consumers,' lead attorney Debra Wong Yang said in a statement.

The legal action by the music publishers arrives about two months after a federal judge ruled a similar legal challenge lodged by record labels could proceed. In that dispute, XM argued that its listeners are legally allowed to record music off the radio for personal use under the Home Recording Act of 1992.

Federal courts have upheld users' rights to record music from over-the-air radio for some purposes. The music industry argues that the 'iPod-like' devices marketed by XM are closer to being music download services akin to Apple's iT"

EDGE: Jake Shimabukuro brings his ukulele to the Mountain Stage What do "Ava Maria," "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," "The Star Spangled Banner": "What do 'Ava Maria,' 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps,' 'The Star Spangled Banner' and the Japanese folk song, 'Sakura,' have in common?

On most days not much, but these songs are just a small sample of the deep-and-wide repertoire of Hawaiian ukulele player Jake Shimabukuro, who has been taking the uke on its own wild ride."

Shimabukuro, who has been touring with Jimmy Buffett off and on for the past year and a half, is out on the road solo promoting a sensational CD, "Gently Weeps," produced by Buffett's guitarist Mac McAnally.

Jim Morris is a Trop Rock artist from Florida who has a following from Coast to Coast. There are really two sides to Jim and his music. The is the high energy rocking, dancing side that comes out when Jim preforms with the Big Bamboo Band. Then there is Jim Morris the solo-artist, the singer/songwriter and story teller. Personally I am not sure which Jim I like better.

New Net radio rules draw fire on Capitol Hill | CNET News.com

New Net radio rules draw fire on Capitol Hill | CNET News.com: "A key Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday slammed new federal rules that would require many Internet radio services to pay higher fees to record companies.

Rep. Edward Markey (D-Mass.) had harsh words for a ruling released Tuesday by the U.S. Copyright Royalty Board. It proposes raising the amount that commercial Internet radio services pay to record companies by 30 percent retroactively to 2006 and in each of the next three years through 2009. Each station would have to hand over a minimum $500 royalty payment.

'This represents a body blow to many nascent Internet radio broadcasters and further exacerbates the marketplace imbalance between what different industries pay,' Markey said at a hearing here titled 'The Future of Radio'. The hearing was convened by the House panel on telecommunications and the Internet, of which Markey is chairman. 'It makes little sense to me for the smallest players to pay proportionately the largest royalty fee.'"

Genesis announces tour dates

Genesis announces tour dates: "Genesis' first tour in 15 years will bring the British rock band to Philadelphia's Wachovia Center on Sept. 18.
Tickets for the concert go on sale Saturday at 10 a.m., with prices scaled at $230, $130, $80 and $60.

Philadelphia is among 13 cities on the Turn It On Again tour that begins Sept. 7 in Toronto. The road trip was announced Wednesday by the band's three main members, singer-drummer Phil Collins, bassist-guitarist Mike Rutherford and keyboardist Tony Banks.

Appearing at a New York press conference that was beamed by satellite to reporters in Philadelphia and Montreal, the three musicians also announced that longtime sidemen Chester Thompson (drums) and Daryl Steurmer (guitar) will again join them for the live dates.

According to Collins, a giant payday was not the motivation for the reunion. 'We're not doing it for the money,' he insisted. 'Otherwise we'd be doing (many more shows).' "

The maestro - Jake Shimabukuro

islandpacket.com The maestro - Jake Shimabukuro: "Jake Shimabukuro, a ukulele whiz kid from Hawaii, was going about his daily business two years ago, when over the course of a week he began getting a unusual number of e-mails from friends and family.
“Like 30 in a week,” he said, “All saying, ‘Hey, did you know about this video clip of you going around on the Internet?’”
Generally speaking, this is not something you want to hear. Ever.
But in Shimabukuro’s case, the clip in question was his performance of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” which by then was well on its way to becoming a YouTube sensation that helped secure his position as quite possibly the country’s biggest ukulele virtuoso. “To this day I don’t know how it got on the Internet. But I’m not complaining — it’s been a great way to introduce people to my music, and I’m a big fan now of those sites because they’ve got some amazing musicians on there.”"

I have no one to blame but myself.

However, I also want to apologize to them.

You see, when your friend calls you and says they’re getting tickets for a concert and asks if you are interested in going — and it’s the hippest 60-year-old to rock a pair of bright shorts on stage during his shows — you aren’t refusing.

Sorry Rams, Raiders. Jimmy Buffett is going to win out over you every time."

Chesney speaks out on 'fraud,' gay rumors - Nashville, Tennessee - Friday, 02/16/07 - Tennessean.com

Chesney speaks out on 'fraud,' gay rumors - Nashville, Tennessee - Friday, 02/16/07 - Tennessean.com: "Kenny Chesney hits the media in a big way this week.

Kenny will appear on CBS' 60 Minutes Sunday and finally explain the meaning of the word 'fraud,' as used by his wife of four months, Renee Zellweger, when she filed annulment papers in 2005. He also is reported to deny the rumors it prompted that he is gay.

The Associated Press reported Thursday the 38-year-old country singer as saying, 'It's not true. Period. Maybe I should have come out and said, 'No, I'm not (gay),' but I didn't want to draw any more attention to it. ... I didn't have to prove to anybody that I wasn't (gay). I didn't feel like I really did.'

Though Renee later released a statement saying the word 'fraud' didn't reflect on Kenny's character and was just a legal term, rumors continued. 'We thought the least harmful (stated reason) was fraud because it (is) kind of broad ... doesn't specify,' AP quotes Kenny as saying. 'And boy .... we were wrong.'

'The only fraud that was committed was me thinking that I knew what it was like . . . that I really understood what it was like to be married, and I really didn't,' he says."

Bon Jovi among Gore climate show acts

Bon Jovi among Gore climate show acts: "Al Gore announced today a series of worldwide concerts to focus on the threat of climate change, with a powerhouse lineup from the Red Hot Chili Peppers to Snoop Dogg to Bon Jovi.
The 24-hour event on July 7 is part of a campaign, Save Our Selves -- The Campaign for a Climate in Crisis, that promoters hope will trigger a broad movement to address what the former vice president calls a global climate crisis.

'In order to solve the climate crisis, we have to reach billions of people,' the environmental activist, filmmaker and 2000 Democratic presidential nominee said in a statement. 'The climate crisis will only be stopped by an unprecedented and sustained global movement.'

More than 100 performers are scheduled to appear at the July concerts, including Etheridge, the Foo Fighters, Lenny Kravitz, Sheryl Crow, John Mayer, Duran Duran, Korn, Pharrell, the Black Eyed Peas, Akon, Enrique Iglesias, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw."
