TheStar.com - entertainment - The complicated uncomplicated life of Jimmy Buffett

TheStar.com - entertainment - The complicated uncomplicated life of Jimmy Buffett: "The complicated uncomplicated life of Jimmy Buffett"
ep 01, 2007 04:30 AM
Sometimes Jimmy Buffett's world gets a little too complicated.
After a lifetime spent in the pursuit of uncluttered self-contentment – "some music, a couple of hours in the water, a nap in the afternoon is all I really need," the American folk-pop icon said during a recent interview – he seems to have achieved exactly the opposite.
He's the head of a massive and complex empire that embraces recording, distribution, music publishing, merchandising and concert interests; the creation of several bestselling novels and an autobiography; Internet radio; movie and stage musical productions; two restaurant chains; a brewery, and a casino resort that will open in Biloxi, Miss. in 2010, not far from his birthplace in Pascagoula.
The 61-year-old accidental mogul, who also flies and collects antique planes and regularly sails his own yacht to distant and exotic destinations, says he has "about 4,000 or 5,000" people working for him and a handful of executives who take care of the various day-to-day operations of his multi-faceted business.
But though he likes to think he has his hand on the wheel, that's not always the case. A few months ago the much-mythologized, free-spirited macho icon worshipped by hundreds of thousands of self-proclaimed Parrotheads approved a general U.S.-food industry-inspired ban on Canadian seafood in his restaurants and immediately found himself at odds with his legions of Canadian fans, as well as relatives in Newfoundland.

Parrot Heads PHlock together to party with a purpose
Sounds usual. However, members of this group have an angle to partying, which they believe sets them apart.
Parrot Heads are proud to be known for “partying with a purpose.” Their partying leads to fundraising for charitable organizations.
Mike Schneider of Destin is past president and one of 20 charter members of the Emerald Coast Parrot Head Club, which was chartered in 2000. He had never been a member of the Parrot Heads before, but he is a big fan of Jimmy Buffet music and the laid-back lifestyle he sings about.
“It’s a fun group,” said Schneider, “a light-hearted group. I like that it’s musical and its tropical theme and that it helps area groups. Members are really active in the community.”
The ECPHC, based in Destin, boasted 581 members last year and was the third largest in the Parrot Head Nation. It is a non-profit corporation and supports local environmental causes through fundraising and volunteering. Centered around the tropical spirit of Jimmy Buffett's music, social functions incorporate that flavor and coastal philosophy into the group’s twice monthly meetings. “PHlockings” are usually held at F"

Parrot Heads raise $35,000 to fight cancer
The nonprofit organization, which draws its inspiration from feel-good musician Jimmy Buffett, is widely known for its charitable endeavors. The 190-member Nautical Whaler's chapter of the worldwide contingent recently presented a check for nearly $35,000 to the Jimmy Fund-Dana Farber Cancer Institute on behalf of the nine New England Parrot Head chapters.
'Our goal is to have fun and help out people who need it,' said Brian Woolley, a cancer survivor who founded the local chapter of the Parrot Head Club in 1999, along with his wife, Maureen. 'We saw a real need in the area and decided to do something.'
'Around that time we founded the group I was in an accident that kept me laid up for 18 months,' said Ms.Woolley, noting that Mr. Buffett's music helped lift her spirits during the difficult time."

For some, Buffett concert failed to meet expectations | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle
The sound was uneven. At times the music drowned out the lyrics and, as we all know, Jimmy's songs are 75 percent lyrics and 25 percent melody. Not sure if it was first-stop-of-the-tour logistical problems or lack of rehearsal time.
Still, a really good concert. The new songs are great. In fact the album is one of his best since License to Chill and a step above Beach House on the Moon. Who says you have to know the old Buffett songs to enjoy being a Parrothead? To those folks I say 'breathe in, breathe out, move on.'
Note to Drayton: Please ask the beer vendors not to hawk beverages during the concert. They tried to do it quietly but still, it's not a ballgame when Buffett is singing and the Coral Reefers are playing in centerfield"

Hoffman: Minute Maid is ready for Parrotheads | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle
Lucas is a certified Parrothead, a longtime Buffett fan.
Astros president of business operations Pam Gardner 'mentioned that the team was interested in getting a show or two at Minute Maid,' Lucas said. 'The first person I thought of was Jimmy Buffett. He hadn't played Houston in a long time. When you check out the way he packs concerts all over the country, I figured if you're looking for someone to play here, he's the one. Plus, I had struck up a friendship with people in Jimmy's management company during my years of working for the Dodgers.'
Lucas called Buffett's management and said, 'We'd like to have Jimmy play Minute Maid Park. What do we have to do to get him here?'
The first order was putting together a formal proposal. That took a month.
'Kala Sorenson, our vice president of special events, included seating charts and aerial photos from other events, like the party for President Bush and the George Strait concert. Jimmy's team wasn't familiar with our ballpark as a venue, so we wanted to show that we can stage a concert of thi"

Project to sink Vandenberg off Key West begins

Sport Fishing - Project to sink Vandenberg off Key West begins: "fter 10 years of fundraising and permitting, a project has begun to sink a retired military ship off Key West, Fla., to serve as an artificial reef.
Last Friday, the decommissioned U.S. Air Force missile-tracking ship Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg, a 523-foot ship that also monitored NASA space launches from 1963 to 1983, was towed from the James River Naval Reserve Fleet in Fort Eustis, Va., to Colonna's Shipyard in Norfolk, Va.
The ship also saw 'action' as a film set in the 1999 movie 'Virus,' starring Jamie Lee Curtis and William Baldwin.
The ship is to become the second-largest vessel ever intentionally sunk to become an artificial reef, according to maritime and recreational diving experts. Currently, the largest ship ever scuttled for an artificial marine habitat is the USS Oriskany, an 888-foot Navy aircraft carrier sunk in May 2006 21 miles southeast of Pensacola, Fla. To date, the second-largest vessel, the 510-foot landing ship dock Spiegel Grove, was scuttled in May 2002 about six miles off Key Largo.
Artificial Reefs of the Keys has $3 million in commitments from two Monroe County government entities, a $1.3 million pledge from the City of Key West and other funding resources to help defray the estimated $5.7 million price tag to properly sink the ship, according to Joe Weatherby, the project's coordinator and founder of ARK.
Make-ready and cleansing is being coordinated by ReefMakers, and is expected to take about a year. The ship is slated for scuttling about six miles off Key West in spring 2008.
The proposed artificial reef is expected to attract marine life, provide ongoing positive impact to the tourism-based economy and benefit the underwater environment by taking recreational diving pressure off natural coral reefs. It will also serve as a sportfishing venue for anglers.
"She's an eye-popper and doesn't look like anything else out there," Weatherby said, noting the large electronic tracking dishes that are to be removed and then reinstalled on the ship before sinking. "Portions (of the ship) will come up to within 40 feet from the surface, making it a world-class dive."
For more information on the Vandenberg, dive into www.bigshipwrecks.com. More travel details on the Keys are available at www.fla-keys.com."

There's 'Florida,' a breezy ode to ocean breezes, fishing and sunshine by Apopka-born country singer Patrick Gibson, who calls himself the 'Florida Cracker Country Boy.' It sounds like a lost Jimmy Buffett track.
'It's just the perfect song,' says Jeff Schoenthaler, Gibson's manager. 'If we could get it to the right person, it could be a big hit. It really sums up what Florida is about.'"

6-string slingers

TUSKmag.com: "If he weren’t a long-acknowledged master, you might apply the term journeyman to Will Kimbrough.
It’d be a punning thought, based on the idea that an in-demand musician often makes his living on the road, bound to no master but unable to set up shop on his own.
But it’s mostly inaccurate, because to a lot of people, those with ears to hear outside the MTV-CMT-Clear Channel party lines, Will Kimbrough is a master musician, one who should have long been a superstar with the requisite legions of fans and followers.
If his fans’ fans would just follow, he’d probably have the big numbers. We’re talking about Kimbrough fans such as Jimmy Buffett, Rodney Crowell, Todd Snider and Kim Richey.
Kimbrough has led a number of bands, from his early days with Will and the Bushmen, cutting two discs for Capitol EMI, to The Bis-quits and Daddy projects with fellow should-be-a-star Tommy Womack. And he was the mainstay behind Snider’s Nervous Wrecks, as lead guitarist and harmony vocalist, in a relationship that continues today, with Kimbrough producing and playing on Snider’s most recent records.
He’s been a sideman with luminaries such as Crowell, Kim Richey and Josh Rouse, and produced records not just for Snider but for Adrienne Young and Kate Campbell. A couple of years back" his fellow Mobile native Buffett cut a version of Kimbrough’s song “Piece of Work,” and later invited him down to St. Bart’s to co-write some new tunes.
While they were enjoying the weather, up popped Roger Waters of Pink Floyd.
“So I had a conversation over beers and sushi with Roger Waters about Neil Young and “Rust Never Sleeps,’” Kimbrough said.
“That is something that you would have dreamed up as a teen-ager, and I actually did it. I make a living doing this,” Kimbrough said.

The Sun Chronicle Online - News: "Jimmy Buffett fans expecting to tailgate to his Gillette Stadium debut concerts in the morning won't be welcome in Margaritaville.
The Gillette parking lots won't open until 3:30 p.m., four hours before showtime, selectmen said Tuesday night.
Selectmen voted to license the two sold-out shows, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 2, and Saturday, Sept. 8.
Selectmen voted after discussing the parking issues with Police Chief Edward O'Leary, stadium official Dan Murphy and Stadium Advisory Committee Chairman George Bell II.
'I think we've gone out of our way,' Selectmen Vice Chairman James Thrasher said. 'The public understands we're not licensing the lots to open until 3:30 p.m.'"

There's just one artist perfect for new state song - Orlando Sentinel : News Columnists
Seems that someone finally realized the song's lyrics refer nostalgically to 'darkeys' on the 'old plantation.' Gee, do you think it might be time for an update? If so, where do we go from here?
The answer is one artist and one only. But that depends on whether Floridians -- read that 'state legislators' -- can stop taking themselves and this state so seriously.
Let's consider the choices, which are pretty narrow. Few songs mention Florida more than just incidentally. Take the Beach Boys' hit from the 1980s, 'Kokomo,' which declares, 'Off the Florida Keys, there's a place called Kokomo. That's where you wanna go to get away from it all.' True, but who wants advice from California boys?
Then there are songs that focus on Florida, but they tend to be less than flattering, such as Eric Clapton's 'Mainline Florida,' written when he lived in Miami. Clearly, he was thrilled to get out.
What about a Florida artist?
There's Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, rock 'n' rollers originally from Gainesville. Or Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Southern rock band revived from a 1977 plane crash. How about country star John Anderson from Apopka? Or Miami's Latina vocalist Gloria Estefan? For the seniors, crooner Pat Boone from Jacksonville is an option. (Is he still alive?)
Little music from any of the above is focused on Florida.
The late folk singer Gamble Rogers told Florida stories, but his ballads aren't very melodic. Stadiums of people singing them might cause the earth to quiver on its axis. And unfortunately, nobody knows who the guy is anymore.
It's back to the obvious: Jimmy Buffett.
On his License to Chill CD, Buffett wondered, "Am I country, pop or rock 'n' roll? I know they are related."
Oh, dear. Identity crisis at 60. Let me help.
Jimmy, you're pure Floridana."

The maestro - Jake Shimabukuro

“Like 30 in a week,” he said, “All saying, ‘Hey, did you know about this video clip of you going around on the Internet?’”
Generally speaking, this is not something you want to hear. Ever.
But in Shimabukuro’s case, the clip in question was his performance of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” which by then was well on its way to becoming a YouTube sensation that helped secure his position as quite possibly the country’s biggest ukulele virtuoso. “To this day I don’t know how it got on the Internet. But I’m not complaining — it’s been a great way to introduce people to my music, and I’m a big fan now of those sites because they’ve got some amazing musicians on there.”"

Buffett's new beer masquerades as microbrew
Now, Buffett has a new beer sponsor: LandShark Lager. The beer comes in clear bottles that are emblazoned with fins and reflect the laid-back vibe of Buffett, the entrepreneur and singer who lives in Palm Beach."
At first glance, LandShark looks like a microbrew that's produced by Buffett himself. After all, the name alludes to the Buffett song Fins, the product is displayed prominently on Buffett's Web site and the bottle says the lager is made by Margaritaville Brewing Co. of Jacksonville.
But LandShark is brewed by Anheuser-Busch Cos. of St. Louis, although the nation's largest brewer seeks a stealth role. An Anheuser-Busch spokeswoman declined to comment on the product, except to confirm that it's made by the maker of Budweiser and Bud Light.
LandShark isn't the first beer to hide a big brewer's involvement. Anheuser-Busch's Wild Hop Lager and Stone Mill Pale Ale, both organic brews, are marketed as the product of Green Valley Brewing Co.
And Blue Moon, a purported craft beer, in fact is brewed by Molson Coors Brewing Co.
LandShark is available in Margaritaville restaurants and will be sold at Buffett concerts. For now, the beer is being distributed to stores and restaurants only in Florida. A six-pack of LandShark cost $8.09 at Winn-Dixie last week.
Dean Lavallee, owner of the 10 Park Avenue BBQ and Grille restaurants in Palm Beach and Martin counties, said LandShark has been selling briskly at his restaurants.
"It seems to go well with barbecue," Lavallee said.
And while a waiter at his Lake Worth restaurant last month told diners LandShark was made by Jimmy Buffett, Lavallee doesn't fault Anheuser-Busch for hiding its role.
"I see it as smart marketing for them," Lavallee said. "There's kind of a reverse snobbism that says if a big company makes it, it can't be good. If it was called Budweiser LandShark Lager, it probably wouldn't be selling as well."
Reviews of LandShark have been less than glowing.
Writing on the United Nations of Beer Web site, reviewer Rob Zerr gave LandShark "a solid two fins down."
"The actual taste is clean enough, but so is tap water," he wrote.
Tallahassee.com beer columnist Doug Blackburn likewise was unimpressed.
"LandShark Lager lacks taste and flavor," he wrote. "At best, it qualifies as a lawn mower beer, a post-workout thirst quencher."

Buffett-That's my story and I'm stickin' to it ... | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle
Hoffman: That's my story and I'm stickin' to it ... | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle: "Jimmy Buffett pushed the wrong button. His hard drive crashed. Several hundred pages of the novel he was working on — Where Is Joe Merchant? — vanished from his computer.
With no backup.
Hello, is this the service department? My name is Jimmy Buffett and ...
'I was the manager of customer support for Compaq back in 1990,' said The Woodlands resident Coleman Sisson."
"Fortunately, I was able to recover his book for him. After that, Jimmy started calling, asking me how to do things on his computer, and I ended up spending a lot of time teaching him everything from Word to Midi to Animation tools.
"Pretty soon I was going out on his tours. Then I was working for him full time."
Now Sisson is the chief technology officer and Internet marketing manager for Buffett's Web site, www.margaritaville.com, and Internet radio station, Radio Margaritaville.
"Mostly my job is to help Jimmy connect with his fans through the Internet and make sure the technology is in place to deliver the stuff.
"In 1997 Jimmy called me about helping him with an idea he had for buying an AM radio station in Key West. I told him we should just create our own station on the Internet, and that's how Radio Margaritaville (www.radiomargaritaville.com) happened. I manage the station for Jimmy. In 2005 we got our own channel on Sirius Satellite Radio and now have over 1 million listeners."
Sisson said Buffett is hands-on, totally involved with his Internet radio station and Web site.
"We talk regularly about margaritaville.com and Radio Margaritaville. He trusts me to know what the fans want, and we have lots of people at the radio studio in Florida who are dedicated to making sure we take care of the Parrotheads.
"Jimmy is everything the fans would expect him to be. He is a technical genius like no one else I've known. And I've never seen him wear a tie," Sisson said.
Three years ago, Sisson started his own company, Bubble Up, and began creating and managing Web sites for other artists, like Hall and Oates, Big & Rich, John Mellencamp, Gretchen Wilson and, welcome to the Internet Age ... Barbra Streisand.
Bubble Up also handles corporate accounts, including Sam Houston Race Park, Sterling First Aid and the Retirement Pros.
All this in addition to his No. 1 client — Buffett.
"I wanted to take my passion for music and technology, plus my 25 years in the business world, to help artists and corporations maximize the Internet. The needs of artists and corporations are very similar. It's about connecting with your customer, whether that customer is a fan or a consumer or another company. You have to build relationships. My device is the Internet."
When artists hire Bubble Up, the first thing Sisson does is listen to their music.
"We go to concerts and visit the artist and their management. We have to understand what the artist is about, from what colors they like, what music they listen to and everything else.
"Then we talk to their fans at concerts because we want the Web site to extend the live concert experience. The ultimate is for a fan to meet the artist, and we try to get them as close as possible."
Each artist is different, with different needs and ideas. They all contribute ideas and direction.
"They are very involved, especially in the early stages when we're creating the design and content. I talk to Jimmy a lot about the music we play on Radio Margaritaville, and there are specific things he wants on www.margaritaville.com. Every artist's management is heavily involved, too.
"It takes long hours on each artist's Web site to make it work, so their fans will keep coming back. The toughest job we have is answering all the e-mails from fans and monitoring the discussion groups and chat rooms.
"Of course, the main job is to keep the Web sites updated with content, news and tour updates. We also post photos from the concert.
"In Jimmy's case, every concert he does is aired live on Radio Margaritaville and www.margaritaville.com.
"He's a full-time job by himself, but it's pure joy working with someone you're already a fan of."

BUFFETT/PARROTHEAD-Column: Sorry, Buffett always wins out
I have no one to blame but myself.
There were host Crescent City and Interlachen both on the same basketball court playing for the District 6-3A boys title. And I want to congratulate the Interlachen High boys for that 57-47 win over the Raiders.
However, I also want to apologize to them.
You see, when your friend calls you and says they’re getting tickets for a concert and asks if you are interested in going — and it’s the hippest 60-year-old to rock a pair of bright shorts on stage during his shows — you aren’t refusing.
Sorry Rams, Raiders. Jimmy Buffett is going to win out over you every time."

Chesney speaks out on 'fraud,' gay rumors - Nashville, Tennessee - Friday, 02/16/07 - Tennessean.com
Kenny will appear on CBS' 60 Minutes Sunday and finally explain the meaning of the word 'fraud,' as used by his wife of four months, Renee Zellweger, when she filed annulment papers in 2005. He also is reported to deny the rumors it prompted that he is gay.
The Associated Press reported Thursday the 38-year-old country singer as saying, 'It's not true. Period. Maybe I should have come out and said, 'No, I'm not (gay),' but I didn't want to draw any more attention to it. ... I didn't have to prove to anybody that I wasn't (gay). I didn't feel like I really did.'
Though Renee later released a statement saying the word 'fraud' didn't reflect on Kenny's character and was just a legal term, rumors continued. 'We thought the least harmful (stated reason) was fraud because it (is) kind of broad ... doesn't specify,' AP quotes Kenny as saying. 'And boy .... we were wrong.'
'The only fraud that was committed was me thinking that I knew what it was like . . . that I really understood what it was like to be married, and I really didn't,' he says."

KEY WEST- An isle where anything goes
Islanders call themselves 'conchs' after the large shells that were a favorite of the English Bahamian settlers. Many of them were wreckers, salvaging valuable cargo -- and theoretically saving the passengers -- from ships that ran afoul of the nearby reefs. Then came the spongers and Cuban cigar-makers, contributing to a booming local economy in the second half of the 19th century.
The heart of Key West is mile-long Duval Street. Tourists, many of them carrying fruity alcoholic beverages, saunter past an array of head shops; souvenir stores selling T-shirts with slogans unprintable in most publications; restaurant hawkers touting 2-for-1 margaritas; and the occasional clothing-optional bar."

KEY WEST- Tour guide keeps his two-wheeler in motion
BY CAMMY CLARK
cclark@MiamiHerald.com
KEY WEST - Lloyd Mager, tour guide, is ready. Machete: sharpened. Coconuts: ripe. Conch shell: in tune. Corny jokes: at the tip of his tongue.
His latest group of vacationers, from Ohio and Maine, are about to see what's left of his paradise -- the parts of Key West not yet paved over by the newest Hard Rock Café or condominium project.
''Some people think going to Ripley's Believe It or Not is a day in Key West,'' says Mager, 53, a native New Yorker who arrived in the southernmost city 35 years ago to visit his brother and never left. ``For $80, people go up in a parasail for 12 minutes. For $100, they go around the island once in a Jet Ski, disturbing the wildlife. I think it's a rip-off and bad for the environment.''
Mager could talk all day about the continuing demise of Key West, but he's got to play Flight of the Bumblebee on his conch sh"

.Which way to Margaritaville?
An excited throng of fans packed into the sold-out Civic Center on Saturday night, waiting for Jimmy Buffett and his band, The Coral Reefers.
A sea of Hawaiian shirts, beads, flowers and grass skirts rumbled with anticipation as the ParrotHeads (Buffett fans) shook hands and toasted cups.
The singer kicked off his flip flops, grabbed the microphone and smiled.
“Let's just get started - what do you think?” he asked.
The crowd erupted.

Wasted away again
TheStar.com - Travel - Wasted away again: "KEY WEST, FLA.–Despite fashion trends and colourful enticements from Victoria's Secret, most women still wear white bras.
At least that's how it looks from below seemingly endless rows of delicates (some autographed with decidedly indelicate suggestions) jammed in tight rows across the ceiling at Captain Tony's Saloon in Key West.
Every Jimmy Buffett fan (called Parrotheads) knows the lyric that begins: 'Went down to Captain Tony's to get out of the heat.' So the dark, rough and tumble watering hole with a tree growing in the middle of the room that often slaked the thirst of Ernest Hemingway is a first stop for every loyal follower.
Over a cold Corona in the pokey room that's barely lit, despite the doors and windows opening to the street, the barkeep John thumbed through a copy of John Kennedy Toole's A Confederacy of Dunces, reading selected bits aloud to me beneath the underwires and push-ups that were gently swaying in the coolish breeze."

Faces in the crowd: Woodlands man links bands with fans | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle
Faces in the crowd: Woodlands man links bands with fans | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle: "On the third floor of an office building, Coleman Sisson links mega stars in the music business with the fans who worship them.
As the CEO of BubbleUp Media in The Woodlands, Sisson and his team design and create Web sites for major label recording artists, including Jimmy Buffett, Big & Rich and Gretchen Wilson.
The sites feature the artists' home page, with interviews, tour dates, merchandise and news.
Once a software engineer, Sisson climbed the corporate ladder, eventually landing a management position in customer support at a computer software company. In 1990, someone handed Sisson a note that changed his life.
'Someone brought me a note that Jimmy Buffett had called,' he said. 'I thought it was a joke. His hard drive had crashed and he was working on a book on it. I got it back. He started calling me with computer questions, and I trained him to use the computer. If he hadn't been a musician, he would have been a really good computer engineer.'"

Orlando Sentinel - Buffett pleases, which isn't surprising by JimAbbott
Near the end of his generous, highly spirited concert on Thursday at the Amway Arena, Buffett did a nice job of explaining the reason as he offered his own thanks for such enduring fan adulation.
'I always liked coming here,' Buffett said of Orlando. 'I know what I'm gonna get.'
So do the fans and Buffett and his 13-member Coral Reefer Band didn't disappoint at this stop on a mini-tour across Florida. After all these years (the man is 60 now), Buffett is still one of the most reliable commodities in the music business. The songs remain the same and that's OK.
In that spirit, there were the usual assortment of signature songs in Buffett's 2-plus hours of music: 'Come Monday,' 'Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes,' 'Cheeseburger in Paradise,' 'Son of a Son of a Sailor,' 'Fins'and the obligatory 'Margaritaville.'"

Where's 'Margaritaville'? It ain't in Pensacola | Entertainment | PensacolaNewsJournal.com - Sent Using Google Toolbar
For the past couple of weeks, I've had a big problem. This guy just wouldn't stop bugging me about Jimmy Buffett.
"Why doesn't Jimmy Buffett ever come to Pensacola?"
I've heard the question several times in the last few weeks, ever since Buffett's Saturday concert in Tallahassee was announced.
You may ask, "Why don't you just ignore the guy?"
Well, I would have, if not for one small fact: The guy in question is my boss, News Journal Executive Editor Richard Schneider.
So, with my paycheck on the line, I started looking into the situation.
